This week, we hear from Adam Hoskins, who is the Musical Director of Annie Get Your Gun, playing at The London Palladium on 7 April.

1) My route into theatre was…
Started acting at the age of six. Transitioned into conducting and orchestration in the third year of my degree. It’s all I’ve ever done.
2) The thing I love most about my job is…
There really is no business like show business (to quote our show!) Getting to work with so many different people is so exciting.
3) My favourite show from present or past (that isn’t one I have worked on) is…
The Phantom Of The Opera was the first show I became obsessed with aged 11. I’ve been really lucky to work on some of my favourites so I won’t cheat and say those!
4) A misconception about my job is…
We’re not all egomaniacs. The job allows us to facilitate and help a huge amount of people and that’s really rewarding.
5) The hardest part about my job is…
We have to help a whole lot of people at once. It’s hugely rewarding but it takes a toll: an incredible amount of focus required for intense periods.
6) The career moment I’m most proud of is…
When we got to play Songs for a New World at the London Palladium as one of only shows to open during the pandemic. The audience responses were something I’ll never forget.
7) On my days off I like to…
Work more? I’m a huge fan of gaming, reading, walking the dog. Anything creative really.
8) My daily work rituals include…
Whatever is required. Sometimes it’s booking musicians, coaching actors, orchestrating shows, teaching students. When you’re in rehearsals, it’s whatever is needed on that particular day.
9) My inspiration is…
Jonathan Tunick-to be so technically excellent and yet explicitly creative is mind blowing.
10) The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given is…
Scared people do drastic things. Everybody has pressures exerted on them and that person that might seem angry or frustrated at you has their own troubles. Take a breath and take a moment.
