St James premieres US hit play Sideways

Published 11 February 2016

The stage adaptation of Rex Pickett’s novel Sideways, on which the Oscar-winning film was based, will receive its UK and European premiere when it plays at London’s St James Theatre this summer.

Running from 26 May to 9 July, Sideways will be directed in London by David Grindley. Casting is still to be announced.

Sideways tells the story of best friends Miles and Jack who head to Santa Barbara for a week of wine tasting. When they meet Maya and Terra, the foursome learns just how intoxicating a good glass of wine and good company can be, for better and for worse.

Speaking about the London premiere of Sideways, Pickett said: “From the moment my play Sideways was successfully staged in the US it’s been my express dream to bring it to London. That is not hyperbole. I’ve been a lifelong, die-hard fan of UK films, literature, thespians, and, of course, London’s rich history of theatre and her undying love of language and for the spoken word. The Brit influence on my work is incalculable, my debt enormous. Bringing Sideways to London is that dream realised in Technicolor, that debt remunerated in the only way I’m capable of expressing my immeasurable gratitude.”

Sideways opens at Victoria’s St James Theatre following an eclectic spring season which includes current hit The Pianist Of Willesden Lane, new musical Miss Atomic Bomb and Charlotte Keatley’s award-winning tale of motherhood, My Mother Said I Never Should.
