West End hosts first Afrobeats musical

The Lyric theatre will host the first Afrobeats musical ever to play in the West End when it welcomes Oliva Tweest through its doors on 15 April.

Based on D’Banj’s 2012 hit single Oliver Twist, Oliva Tweest tells the story of a promiscuous young man whose past comes back to haunt him when he meets a girl who will change his life forever.

Featuring cameo performances from comedians Eddie Kadi and A Dot Comedian, the new musical, which is presented by The Marimba Project, will recreate well-known Afrobeats songs from artists including Wizkid and D’Banj.

While the West End might be new to the idea of an Afrobeats musical, London isn’t. Broadway hit Fela!, which tells the story of Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, enjoyed successful runs at the National Theatre and Sadler’s Wells.

Promising great imagery, captivating choreography and resounding vocals, Oliva Tweest will take over the Lyric theatre for one night only before the well-known hits of Michael Jackson return to the stage in Thriller Live.
