Romeo And Juliet workshops for families

Published 28 October 2014

The National Theatre is teaching children and their families about the world of Romeo And Juliet this half term with a selection of workshops for children aged six to 12-years-old.

Taking place from 29 October to 1 November, the workshops will run alongside the South Bank venue’s returning production of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, which plays from tomorrow until 14 November.

Youngsters eager to gain a pre-show glimpse into the lives of the Montagues and Capulets can take part in Romeo And Juliet Explore where attendees can find out all about the families’ ancient grudge, stage a street fight and discover some Shakespearean insults to try out on their enemies.

Those more interested in the fighting aspect of the production can go one step further and take part in Stage Fighting: Romeo And Juliet. After picking a side, children will learn a series of moves to create a realistic stage fight to battle on behalf of one of Shakespeare’s most famous families.

While Romeo And Juliet Explored and Stage Fighting: Romeo And Juliet are both ticketed events, free drop-in workshop Graffiti Art – Design A Family Tag offers families the chance to put their collage-making, stencilling and painting skills into practice to create a family street tag inspired by the production.

Suitable for children aged between eight and 12-years-old, Romeo And Juliet brings to life the Bard’s enduring love story for a new generation. Set against a vibrant urban backdrop bursting full of excitement, colour, dancing and live music, the tale of star-crossed lovers and feuding families is recreated by a company of eight performers.

Designed for young audiences experiencing Shakespeare for the first time, Ben Power’s adaptation uses the playwright’s original text but has been edited significantly to ensure that it’s accessible for the specific age range.

Tickets for Romeo And Juliet Explored and Stage Fighting: Romeo And Juliet can be purchased from the National Theatre’s website. Those interested in attending Graffiti Art – Design A Family Tag should sign up on the day from 10:00 at the Clore Learning Centre.
