Rambert dances for families

First Published 17 April 2008, Last Updated 21 April 2008

Rambert Dance Company is offering children and their families the chance to gain an insight into the workings of the company and the experience of modern dance through its family matinee at Sadler’s Wells on 26 May.

Rambert’s Artistic Director Mark Baldwin will be on hand to introduce Rambert’s dancers performing two works from the company’s repertoire: the world premiere of a new work by American choreographer Karole Armitage, Gran Partita, and the London premiere of Canadian choreographer Andre Gingras’s new work Anatomica #3. Both pieces are set to music performed by Rambert’s associate orchestra London Musici.

Aimed specifically at families, the special Saturday matinee is part of Rambert’s mandate to make dance accessible to all. Baldwin told officiallondontheatre: “The family matinee is an enjoyable look at the workings of the Rambert Dance Company. We meet the dancers, watch them do some of a class, which is the daily exercises devised to help achieve the agility, strength and rhythmic expertise required to be a dancer in the company. You will even be shown how you, too, can relate to how they move. You will be talked through two of the company’s works, gaining insights into what the work is about, things to look out for, and how the design elements and music play a crucial role in the work, helping to enrich your enjoyment and pleasure.”

The family matinee is held at 14:30 on Saturday 26 May. A family ticket for four (at least one adult and one child) is available for £40 from Sadler’s Wells box office, 0844 412 4300. Rambert performs its full programme at the venue from 22-26 May at 19:30.
