Musical stars create YouTube hit

Published 22 March 2011

A host of the West End’s most recognisable musical theatre faces are starring in an internet video that has already received thousands of hits.

The five-minute Portrait Of A Princess music video stars former Avenue Q lead Julie Atherton alongside Olivier Award-winner Sheridan Smith, former History Boys Steven Webb and Russell Tovey, current Jersey Boys star and former S Club 7 singer Jon Lee and ex-Avenue Q performer Paul Spicer. It was created to publicise the song by up and coming composer Michael Bruce, whose debut album Unwritten Songs was launched last Sunday.

The song and video, which can be seen on YouTube or at www.portraitofaprincess.com, gives a new comic twist to the idea of a fairytale princess and the fantastical life they may, or may not, lead.

Speaking about the decision to create the video, Neil Eckersley, Executive Producer of Speckulation Entertainment, which produced Bruce’s album and the video, said: “We wanted to find a way of introducing Michael’s music to a wider audience. Having an audiovisual tool to do that with is invaluable and we’re delighted with the result. A stellar cast, a stunning song and BAFTA-winning creative team combine to provide a first for contemporary musical theatre.”

In addition to launching his first album, Bruce, who is the Resident Composer at London’s Bush theatre, is also composing the music for one of the most hotly anticipated shows of the year, the Josie Rourke-directed production of Much Ado About Nothing that will see former Doctor Who co-stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate reunited on stage.
