So we know you can’t stop the beat and apparently, you can’t stop Michael Ball from playing Edna Turnblad because he’s reprising his role in Hairspray next year! The world-famous performer will play the iconic character which earned him an Olivier Award when the swinging musical plays a 12-week run at the London Coliseum from 23 April 2020.

Based on the John Water film of the same name, Hairspray is the story of love, music, dance and acceptance.

It’s 1962 and Baltimore teen Tracy Turnblad is ready to shine. She’s a big girl with big hair and big dreams and nothing’s going to hold her down. With dreams of making it on the local TV dance show, she ignores all her critics and does what she does best: dance. But will she be accepted? Will she win the heart of teen heartthrob, Link Larkin, and bring everyone together no matter their colour, size or hairdo?

This feel-good musical isn’t just a fan favourite for its upbeat message of self-belief and inclusivity, the songs are pretty amazing, too. Featuring the likes of Without Love, You Can’t Stop The Beat, Big Blonde And Beautiful, Good Morning Baltimore, and more, this timely production will leave you feeling upbeat, hopeful and inspired.

The London Coliseum production is brought to you by the award-winning creative team of director Jack O’Brien and choreographer Jerry Mitchell.

The original New York production of Hairspray won three Tony Awards, including Best New Musical, whilst the original West End production won four Olivier Awards, also including Best New Musical, as well giving Michael Ball one of his two Olivier Awards for Best Actor in a Musical.

We’re yet to hear who else will star in the upcoming production and we’re counting down the days until we know who the new girl in town is.
