Menier Chocolate Factory to stage Kiss Of The Spider Woman play

By Robin Johnson Published 22 January 2018

The Menier Chocolate Factory will stage a major new play production of Manuel Puig’s shattering novel Kiss Of The Spider Woman this Spring.

José Rivera and Allan Baker’s stage adaptation, last seen in London at the Donmar Warehouse in 2007, will be directed by Laurie Sansom, and tells the story of a friendship struck up between two startlingly different men in a Latin American jail. A provocative and ground-breaking tale of love and victimisation ensues.

The show marks Sansom’s Menier debut, following his acclaimed tenure as Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Scotland. UK Theatre Award-winner Jon Bausor is the production’s Designer, with Paul Anderson the Lighting Designer, and Philip Pinsky on Sound Design.

Manuel Puig (1932-1990) was an Argentinian novelist, playwright and screenwriter. His other major novels include Betrayed By Rita Hayworth, Heartbreak Tango and The Buenos Aires Affair, and his plays included Under A Mantle Of Stars: A Play In Two Acts.

Kiss Of The Spider Woman will officially open on 21 March, with previews from 8 March, playing until 5 May at the Southwark venue. Tickets can be booked through the Menier Chocolate Factory website.

The new production’s run follows that of circus musical Barnum at the intimate venue, for which tickets can be purchased through our New Year Sale.
