Olivier award-winning actress Juliet Stevenson is to star in the upcoming world premiere production of The Doctor at the Almeida Theatre.

No stranger to the Almeida, Juliet has performed in several productions there, including Mary Stuart and Hamlet. She’s previously won an Olivier for her performance as Paulina in Death and The Maiden in 1991, (as well as receiving four nominations), and has also been nominated fives times for a BAFTA. A CBE, she has appeared in many films too, including Let Me Go, Bend it Like Beckham, Mona Lisa Smile and Departure.

Starring alongside Juliet will be Ria Zmitrowicz who also makes her return the Almeida. She has previously performed in Dance Nation and is currently playing the role of Irina in Three Sisters. Further casting is still to be announced.

A new play for the West End, The Doctor is written and directed by Robert Icke, who has previously collaborated with Juliet on two other productions. The Doctor is adapted from an Arthur Schnitzler’s play entitled Professor Bernhardi.

Marking Robert’s final show as the Almeida’s Associate Director, he has previously worked on many acclaimed productions there, including Wild Duck, Hamlet, Mary Stuart, Oresteia, Uncle Vanya, Mr Burns and 1984.

Robert Icke said, “I’ve had a fantastic six years here, but it’s become impossible to give the building the attention it deserves alongside my other work for theatre and for the screen. I’m grateful to all my supportive and talented colleagues over that time, on stage and off, including so many wonderful actors, and to all of the wider Almeida team, some of whom I first met as an Almeida assistant director a decade ago. I look forward to returning in the future.”

The Doctor will run at The Almeida Theatre between 12 August – 28 September. Tickets go on general sale on Tuesday 28 May.
