In rehearsal: Future Conditional

First Published 26 August 2015, Last Updated 26 August 2015

The summer – pah! – is drawing to a close, young people are looking distinctly more glum than they did at the end of July and shops are bulging with their promises of back to school supplies.

There’s a hint of the new term too in these pictures taken in the rehearsal room for Future Conditional.

This is not so much because the cast is the first to perform at the Old Vic now under the guidance of Matthew Warchus, who replaced Kevin Spacey over the summer. Nor is it because the pics were snapped in the early days of rehearsal when the cast had yet to get to know each other.

No, it’s because two of the photographs feature fighting and another depict two very pensive looking adults.

Ah, happy school memories come flooding back, don’t they? A cheery headlock and noogie here, a playful wedgie there. What japes.

Quite how far the hallowed place of learning in Future Conditional resembles my own, I don’t know. I can safely say that Tamsin Oglesby’s new piece will explore the British education system through a host of characters including Pakistani refugee Alia, the newest member of the education commission. See if you can glean any more from the images above.
