Harry Melling returns to London stage

First Published 26 September 2014, Last Updated 26 September 2014

Harry Potter star Harry Melling will appear in his critically acclaimed debut play peddling at the Arcola Theatre next year.

The solo show, which is directed by HighTide Festival Theatre Artistic Director Steven Atkinson, will play at the Dalston venue from 4 to 28 March following successful runs at the 2014 Suffolk festival and in New York.

The production follows the story of a pedlar boy, who awakes in a field somewhere in London with a firework in his hand. Unaware of how he got there and determined to find out, he must venture back to the start via the doorsteps of privileged London and the cracks that swallow thousands of young Londoners every day.

While best known for his role as Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter films, Melling was recently seen on the London stage in Jamie Lloyd’s production of The Hothouse, which played as part of the director’s first Trafalgar Transformed season, and Richard Bean’s Smack Family Robinson at the Rose Theatre Kingston.

Talking about the show’s London transfer, director Atkinson said: “I’m delighted to be bringing another hit to London following its premiere at HighTide Festival 2014. The Arcola has a sterling track record for supporting innovative work and new artists, which makes it perfect for Harry’s debut play.”

As part of its run, peddling will also hold a gala performance on 19 March, the proceeds of which will go to Kids Company’s Playwriting and Performance course, which helps support young people and their writing.
