Primary school children are invited to write a short story inspired by Brazil for Polka theatre’s fourth annual story-writing competition.
Writing The World launched in 2008 with the aim of encouraging children to explore other countries and cultures, and inspire them to put pen to paper.
This year’s competition is supported by the author of the popular children’s books The Raven Mysteries, Marcus Sedgwick, who will help entrants by writing his own short story and offering hints and tips on Polka theatre’s website. Sedgwick commented: “Writing the World is such a great idea. How better to get us all thinking about parts of the world we know less about than to explore them through story-writing?”
The competition is divided into three age categories spanning primary school years one to six. One winner in each category will be presented with £25 of book tokens and, most importantly, see their story performed on Polka theatre’s stage on 9 July.
To tie in with the theme, the theatre has organised a cultural exchange between students at Rotherhide Primary School and a school in Sertaozinho, Brazil. Letters written as part of the exchange will be published on Polka theatre’s website.
