Curious Incident set for West End

Published 1 November 2012

The National Theatre’s The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time will transfer to the West End next year following the critically revered production’s sell-out season at the Southbank venue’s intimate Cottesloe theatre.

Adapted by acclaimed playwright Simon Stephens from Mark Haddon’s 2003 award-winning novel, The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time will play at the Apollo theatre from 1 March (press night 12 March) with Luke Treadaway confirmed to reprise his role as 15-year-old maths genius Christopher Boone.

Famously told from the perspective of a child with behavioural difficulties, the intriguing story begins with Christopher standing beside Mrs Shears’ dead dog, which has been speared by a garden fork. Under suspicion for the dreadful deed, he records every fact he can gather about the case in a book he is writing to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington.

But while Christopher has an extraordinary brain, he has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, detests being touched and distrusts strangers. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world.

Directed by War Horse’s Marianne Elliot, The Curious Incident opened in August to critical acclaim and praised across the board for its innovative movement by theatre company Frantic Assembly and Olivier Award-winner Bunny Christie’s striking geometric grid design. A hit with audiences alike, the production set a new record when its NT Live broadcast was watched by more than 40,000 people in the UK.

The much-rumoured West End run will also see original cast members Matthew Barker, Niamh Cusack, Sophie Duval, Rhiannon Harper-Rafferty, Nick Sidi and Howard Ward reprise their roles for the transfer. Treadaway will only lead performances from Wednesday to Saturday, however, with the alternate Christopher and further casting yet to be announced.
