Cast disembarks Carousel at Savoy

First Published 9 June 2009, Last Updated 12 June 2009

Lindsay Posner’s revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein fantasy musical Carousel is to end its run at the Savoy theatre on 20 June, a month earlier than planned.

The production, which stars Lesley Garrett, Jeremiah James and Alexandra Silber, opened at the Savoy theatre on 2 December and had been booking until 25 July.

The 1945 musical is set in 1870s New England where the disreputable carousel barker Billy Bigelow catches the eye of naïve young mill worker Julie Jordan. The two embark on a love affair which turns to tragedy. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s famous score features numbers including If I Loved You, June Is Bustin’ Out All Over and You’ll Never Walk Alone, the latter performed in Posner’s revival by Garrett, who plays Nettie.

Later this year the Savoy theatre is to stage Broadway import Legally Blonde The Musical, based on the film about college homecoming queen Elle Woods’s reinvention as a Harvard Law student. The musical, which earned itself seven Tony Award nominations when it opened on the Great White Way, receives its UK premiere on 12 January 2010 (previews from 5 December) with Duncan James and Sheridan Smith leading the cast.

No shows have yet been confirmed to precede Legally Blonde The Musical at the Savoy this year.
