Amy Morgan leads Globe’s Broken Heart

Published 15 January 2015

Mr Selfridge star Amy Morgan will appear alongside Owen Teale and Luke Thompson in Shakespeare’s Globe’s forthcoming production of The Broken Heart at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.

Morgan, who plays Grace Calthorpe in the ITV drama about the man behind the London department store, will return to the capital to take on the role of Penthea. Her forthcoming stage outing follows recent appearances in Trelawny Of The Wells at the Donmar Warehouse and Once A Catholic at the Tricycle Theatre.

She is joined by Game Of Thrones’ Teale, whose stage performances include 2013’s Passion Play starring Zoë Wanamaker, Ivanov at the National Theatre and A Doll’s House in the West End and Broadway, for which he picked up a coveted Tony Award in 1997. Teale will play Bassanes in the production.

Playing Ithocles, Thompson returns to the Globe following a number of recent performances at the venue. Last year the actor received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Marc Anthony in Dominic Dromgoole’s production of Julius Caesar, while in 2013 he earned an Evening Standard Award nomination for Most Promising Newcomer following his performance in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The cast of The Broken Heart is completed by Liam Brennan, Brian Ferguson, Patrick Godfrey, Peter Hamilton Dyer, Joe Jameson, Adam Lawrence, Sarah MacRae, Sanchia McCormack, Tom Stuart, Thalissa Teixeira and Phil Whitchurch.

Directed by Caroline Steinbeis, the production explores the devastating consequences of virtue’s attempts to resist desire in a world of stifling restraint and repression. Set in ancient Sparta it tells the story of lovers Penthea and Orgilus as a wedge is driven between them by Penthea’s brother, who demands that she marries a greater nobleman in the form of Bassanes.

The Broken Heart will become the latest production to grace the stage of the Globe’s stunning candle-lit venue when it begins previews on 12 March. Until then, audiences can look forward to the Hattie Morahan-led production of The Changeling, which begins previews tonight, the Royal Opera’s L’Ormindo and Farinelli And The King starring Mark Rylance.
