Widow Simone is trying extremely hard to have her daughter Lise marry the son of a local wealthy farmer. Lise has other ideas, as she is deeply in love with poverty-stricken farmer Colas. The lovers use all their guile to outwit Simone and ensure they can be together.

Ashton’s pastoral comedy is danced to a Hérold score arranged by John Lanchberry. Story book countryside scenes, detailed character observation and poetic lyricism are key features to this ballet, which was first performed in 1960.
