Wax joins Wimbledon’s Genies

First Published 22 October 2009, Last Updated 22 October 2009

Comedian and actress Ruby Wax is the latest performer to join the list of celebrities lined up to play The Genie Of The Lamp in the New Wimbledon theatre’s production of Aladdin this Christmas. She joins Pamela Anderson and Paul O’Grady.

Wax, who previously interviewed fellow genie Anderson for her candid Ruby Wax Meets series of celebrity interviews, will play the magical lamp-dweller from 4 to 12 December, with Anderson appearing – probably in a puff of smoke – from 13 to 27 December and O’Grady bringing the season to an enchanting end from 5 to 10 January. The fourth member of this select band of famous wish-granters is still to be revealed.

Discussing her casting, Wax said: “I again am playing Pamela Anderson’s body double. She is only doing two weeks, but since we are indistinguishable I have said OK I’ll do her for another week. I am almost sick with excitement as I have such hidden talents that I believe will be displayed in their full glory at New Wimbledon theatre.”

The tale of street urchins, lamps, magic, love and an evil doer with only ultimate power on his mind, Aladdin plays at the New Wimbledon theatre from 4 December to 10 January. The glamorous genies are joined in the cast by panto regular and owner of arguably the world’s greatest laugh, Brian Blessed, as the wicked Abanazar.
