Vice President-elect at Hamilton

Published 21 November 2016

On Friday night Vice President-elect Mike Pence attended a performance of Tony Award-winning Musical Hamilton. During the curtain call actor Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr, delivered a message on behalf of the cast to the Indiana Governor.

In part he said: “We, sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us.”

The speech was condemned by President-elect Donald Trump who tweeted: “Our wonderful future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theater by the cast of Hamilton, cameras blazing. This should not happen!”

In his first interview since the incident Mike Pence responded to Fox News Sunday’s host Chris Wallace by saying: “I did hear what was said from the stage, and I can tell you, I wasn’t offended by what was said,” adding that it’s “an incredible production” with “incredibly talented people.”

Hamilton will open in London at the Victoria Palace Theatre in November 2017.
