Urinetown gets West End transfer

Jamie Lloyd’s hit production of Urinetown The Musical will transfer to the Apollo Theatre later this year following its successful run at the St James Theatre.

Featuring music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann with a book and lyrics by Greg Kotis, the eccentric story of a city decimated by drought will play from 29 September at the venue.

Talking about the production’s forthcoming transfer, director Lloyd said: “Having attracted a diverse audience of all ages at the St James earlier this year, I’m bursting to bring our production of this brilliantly off-kilter musical comedy to the West End, where I hope we’ll make an even bigger splash.”

Described by The Telegraph’s Charles Spencer as a “darkly entertaining and exceptionally sharp show”, Urinetown The Musical tells the tale of a town fit to burst, where spending a penny can be a punishable offence and getting caught short can result in a one-way trip to Urinetown.

When the Tony Award-winning hit opened at the St James Theatre in March 2014, it featured a cast including Jenna Russell, Richard Fleeshman, Simon Paisley Day, Marc Elliott and Jonathan Slinger. Casting for the transfer is yet to be announced.

Urinetown The Musical will open at the Apollo Theatre following the current run of John Tiffany’s ethereal production of Let The Right One In, which will come to the end of its run at the theatre on 30 August.
