We don’t need to tell you that theatre has the power to transport you to another world – every theatregoer’s been there. From masterly storytelling to superb performances, there are plenty of ways London theatre shows immerse you in their spectacular settings. And sometimes you come across sets so good, you might as well be there – say, amidst the bustling printing presses of The Sun newspaper, or Parisian streets bursting with bright vivacity, or in a rural Northern Irish district preparing for an exquisite feast, or even watching spring to life in a dilapidated 30s Broadway theatre.

It’s fair to say that this year’s Best Set Design nominees for the Olivier Awards with Mastercard – Bunny Christie, Bob Crowley and 59 Productions, Rob Howell, and Vicki Mortimer – have done precisely that over the past year of theatre, with simply stunning sets which need to be seen to be believed. But how did their remarkable visions begin? We’ve been lucky enough to receive a remarkable glimpse into the original model box designs of Christie (Ink), Bob Crowley and 59 Productions (An American In Paris), Howell (The Ferryman), and Mortimer (Follies) – and ahead of Sunday’s Olivier Awards ceremony, we’re delighted to share them with you.
