National cancels Christmas Cristo

First Published 20 June 2012, Last Updated 20 June 2012

Family theatre fans eager to see the National Theatre production of The Count Of Monte Cristo will have to wait longer than expected as the winter production has been postponed.

A statement on the theatre’s website confirms that “We have put back our plan to produce The Count Of Monte Cristo this winter. We will announce shortly the play that will be mounted instead.”

The swashbuckling drama was due to mark the National Theatre directorial debut of Timothy Sheader, the Artistic Director of the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, and feature a script by One Man, Two Guvnors writer Richard Bean.

In recent years, the National Theatre’s winter family show has been one of the most anticipated productions of the London theatre year, following the success of the stage adaptations of Coram Boy, His Dark Materials and current West End hit War Horse.

Theatregoers who have already bought tickets for The Count Of Monte Cristo will be contacted by the National Theatre.
