Jobs in theatre: an interactive guide

First Published 17 November 2015, Last Updated 19 November 2015

TheatreCraft, the annual beyond-the-stage theatrical careers fair is on us again. Thousands of would-be designers, directors, stage managers, finance directors, stage door managers and wardrobe mistresses will head to the Royal Opera House on Friday to discover more about a career in the theatre industry.

It’s not all about who’s on stage. In fact, for every performer in a production there are tens, if not hundreds, of roles to be done off stage to ensure a production or a theatre runs smoothly.

In preparation for TheatreCraft, we asked this year’s TheatreCraft Ambassador Indhu Rubasingham, the Artistic Director of the Tricycle Theatre, to talk us through some of the roles and teams that are integral to a show’s, or theatre’s, success.

NB It’s impossible to categorise every job in theatre. There are many that have not made it onto our graphic. Sorry. It’s also rather difficult to group them, and we couldn’t ask Indhu to talk about 40 individual roles. With that in mind, enjoy.
