Harker leads Orange Tree’s Lessing drama

Published 13 March 2015

Actress Susannah Harker will lead the cast of the Orange Tree Theatre’s production of Doris Lessing’s Each His Own Wilderness when it opens at the London venue in April.

The production, which is directed by the venue’s Artistic Director Paul Miller, is the first major revival of the work since the drama premiered in a one-off performance at the Royal Court in 1958.

Set in 1958, Lessing’s play is a tale of political vibrancy and apathy. Just back from National Service, Tony is entirely disillusioned and dissatisfied. His mother Myra cannot understand him; she’s been an activist since her youth and her passion has not waned. But her Bohemianism, and that of her friend Milly, leads them to a complex entanglement with the younger generation.

Harker, who may be best known for her television work including the BBC’s Pride And Prejudice and the original House Of Cards, is joined in the cast by Handbagged’s Clare Holman (Myra), Joel MacCormack (Tony), Rosie Holden, John Lightbody, Roger Ringrose and Josh Taylor.

News of Each His Own Wilderness’ casting follows swiftly after the announcement that the hit Orange Tree production of surreal thriller Pomona will transfer to the National Theatre’s Temporary Theatre, formerly known as The Shed, this autumn.
