American Idiot

Green Day musical plays London

The Tony Award-winning musical American Idiot will play London’s HMV Hammersmith Apollo next December following a UK tour.

American Idiot features music by Grammy Award-winning rock band Green Day, with lyrics by lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong. After opening on Broadway in 2010, the musical picked up two Tony Awards and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album later that year.

Based on the concept album of the same name, American Idiot tells the story of three lifelong friends, forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia. Their quest for true meaning in a post 9/11 world leads them on an exhilarating journey.

The show, which The Stage’s Mark Shenton described as “The most compelling new musical of the Broadway season… a show of galvanising energy and theatrical experience”, will feature an American cast and play London from 3 December to 8 December 2012.

Green Day formed in 1987 and have recorded eight albums, selling over 65 million records worldwide. The musical features hit songs by the band including Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, Wake Me Up When September Ends and Holiday.

Green Day frontman Armstrong said: “We’re excited to be bringing the US stage production of American Idiot to the UK and Ireland… We can’t wait for our friends across the pond to see the musical.”

American Idiot is directed by Tony Award-winner Michael Mayer and has choreography by Black Watch’s Olivier Award-winning Steven Hoggett.
