David Wood’s Olivier Award-winning adaptation of Goodnight Mister Tom is to return to London’s West End, playing a Christmas season at the Duke of York’s Theatre.

The stage version of the classic children’s novel, which will star David Troughton in the title role, will play a season in the capital from 11 December to 20 February.

Based on Michelle Magorian’s novel, Goodnight Mister Tom follows William Beech who, in the build up to the Second World War, is evacuated from London to the idyllic English countryside where he builds an unlikely friendship with the elderly recluse Tom Oakley. All goes well until William is called back to London by his mother.

Wood’s adaptation of Goodnight Mister Tom, which was first seen at the Chichester Festival Theatre, won the Olivier Award for Best Entertainment and Family in 2013.

The production marks the London stage return of Royal Shakespeare Company regular Troughton, whose National Theatre credits include Season’s Greetings, Measure For Measure and Peter Pan.

Goodnight Mister Tom arrives at the Duke of York’s Theatre following the much-anticipated autumn run of Shakespeare’s Globe transfer Farinelli And The King.

The drama first seen at The Globe’s indoor theatre, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, stars Mark Rylance as King Philippe V of Spain and tells the story of the most celebrated singer of his time, who chooses to leave behind fame and fortune in favour of life at the king’s court.

Farinelli And The King begins previews next week and runs until 5 December.
