Frantic Assembly’s Othello returns

First Published 28 April 2014, Last Updated 28 April 2014

Frantic Assembly will revive its UK Theatre Award-winning production of Othello later this year, bringing the show to the Lyric Hammersmith for a four-week run in January 2015 following a national tour.

A co-production with the Theatre Royal Plymouth, the innovative physical theatre company’s take on Othello will play from 13 January (press night 14 January) to 7 February at the Hammersmith venue.

Taking Shakespeare’s brutal and gripping tragedy about Othello’s passionate affair with Desdemona away from its traditional Venice setting, Frantic Assembly’s production transports the action to a north England pub, a world of broken glass and beatings in the car park, where tension grows around the pool table and it’s all about to kick off.

Directed by Scott Graham, whose production of The Believers is currently playing at the Tricycle Theatre, the production originally opened at the Theatre Royal Plymouth in September 2008, where it was described by The Guardian’s Lyn Gardner as “violently watchable”.

The revival will open at the Lyric Hammersmith following the venue’s annual pantomime Dick Whittington And His Cat, which plays from 22 November to 3 January.
