First look: Grey Gardens

First Published 4 January 2016, Last Updated 6 January 2016

For many, the new year means two things: a time to reflect and to fill several bin bags for charity with the overflow of wardrobes and unwanted gifts of Christmases past. From the looks of these photos, Grey Gardens got the memo on the first count but not the second.

Antique plates and paintings clutter the set, while patchwork quilts lie atop 1960s printed sheets on chaotic beds, and its stars Sheila Hancock and Jenna Russell are adorned in layers of eccentric Liberty prints and vintage finds: in short, it’s a hoarder’s dream.

But what could be more perfect for Grey Gardens, the Tony Award-winning musical tale based on the legendary 1975 documentary about Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ reclusive aunt and cousin, than this gloriously squalid, eccentrically colourful and disconcertingly nostalgic set?

Charting their dramatic, stranger than fiction lives, Thom Sutherland’s UK premiere production has now begun previews and is bringing the incredible story of the famous aristocrats who fell from grace to London audiences for the very first time at Southwark Playhouse.

So, whatever your New Year’s resolutions are, don’t miss your chance to see two of Britain’s most respected (and Olivier Award-winning) actors perform at the intimate venue by booking your tickets at the Southwark Playhouse website now.
