ENO appoints Cressida Pollock as CEO

English National Opera has today announced two new appointments – Cressida Pollock and Dr Harry Brünjes – who take on the roles of Chief Executive Officer and Chairman respectively.

Pollock joins the company on an additional three-year fixed-term contract having joined ENO on a pro bono basis in September 2014, leading a team from global management consultancy McKinsey & Company. Pollock’s new role will see her bring additional focus to operations and develop a new strategic business plan for the company.

Talking about her appointment, Pollock said: “During my time at ENO so far, I have been genuinely overwhelmed by the talent, dedication and commitment that is demonstrated by everyone in the company. As we enter this new era, I recognise that we face significant challenges – not least to reduce our reliance on public subsidy. However, I am convinced we can succeed and that, with our world-class team, we can continue to produce brilliant opera for audience members in London and around the UK.”

Brünjes takes on his new position having been a trustee on the ENO Board since September 2010 and Acting Chairman of the company since February this year.

Brünjes described serving on the ENO Board as a “privilege” and said he is “delighted to take on the role of Chairman at such an exciting, transformational time for ENO and the London Coliseum.”

Speaking about his future plans, Brünjes said: “Working together with the Board and ENO executive team, I look forward to leading a company dedicated to producing the highest quality opera which is accessible to everyone and to securing the future of our iconic building.”

News of the two appointments comes as ENO continues to undertake a full evaluation of the company’s artistic leadership after Artistic Director John Berry stood down from the post in July.

ENO’s autumn season kicks off on Saturday with Dmitri Tcherniakov’s production of Lady Macbeth Of Mtsensk, with a revival of Rossini’s The Barber Of Seville following closely behind from 28 September.
