Darius joins America in Chicago

First Published 27 October 2011, Last Updated 27 October 2011

Former Pop Idol contestant turned West End leading man, Darius Campbell, is to return to the London stage next month, starring opposite Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera in Chicago.

Campbell, who was formerly known as Darius Danesh, will reprise his performance as sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn in Chicago, which he first treated London theatregoers to in 2006.

After emerging as a star on ITV’s hit talent show, Campbell forged a career first as a pop solo artist and then as a musical theatre performer, appearing in West End productions including Guys And Dolls and Gone With The Wind, in which he originated the role of Rhett Butler. Most recently he has been back on the small screen, winning the last series of celebrity talent show Popstar To Operastar.

Campbell and Ferrera will take to the stage of the Garrick theatre on 7 November, alongside a cast that also includes Amra-Faye Wright, James Doherty, Jasna Ivir and R. Whitehead.

Chicago opens at the Garrick theatre having finished its run at the Cambridge theatre, which now hosts Matilda The Musical, earlier this year. The Laurence Olivier Award-winning story of fame, media manipulation and murderous showgirls will celebrate its 14th London birthday on 18 November.
