Chariots stars run into each other

First Published 12 July 2012, Last Updated 20 August 2013

There was a surprise in store for the cast of the West End’s Olympic drama Chariots Of Fire this week when the stars of the original 1981 film appeared on stage for a unique curtain call.

Ben Cross, Nigel Havers, Nicholas Farrell and Alice Krige were introduced to their stage character counterparts more than 20 years after the Academy Award-winning film, which is being re-released for this fittingly sporting summer, was made. The actors were joined by Hugh Hudson, director of the original film and co-producer of the new stage adaptation.

Chariots Of Fire is set during the 1924 Paris Olympic Games and tells the story of two athletes who live for the beautiful purity of running and who prevail in the face of overwhelming odds. After beginning life at the Hampstead theatre, the stage adaptation, which features an acclaimed stadium design by Miriam Buether, transferred into the West End’s Gielgud theatre where it is booking until 10 November.

Theo Wood captured the photo finish.
