Bend It Like Beckham to close

First Published 13 January 2016, Last Updated 15 January 2016

The full time whistle will blow on Bend It Like Beckham The Musical’s West End fixture with the show set to kick off for the last time at the Phoenix Theatre on 5 March.

Following its successful 10-month world premiere run, Gurinda Chadha’s critically acclaimed musical is planning to head off on both national and international tours.

Adapted from the hit film of the same name, Bend It Like Beckham The Musical arrived in the West End last May, with many of its original leading cast members including Natalie Dew and Lauren Samuels continuing to wow audiences.

Featuring original musical by Howard Goodall and lyrics by Charles Hart, the football themed production tells the story of Jess, a young woman with a big decision to make. Should she live up to family expectations and head towards university and marriage or chase her dreams and follow in the footsteps of Golden Balls himself, David Beckham?

Speaking about its forthcoming closure, Chadha commented:  “I am incredibly proud of the Bend It Like Beckham cast, musicians, production and creative teams. We opened at the Phoenix Theatre to the most amazing five star reviews and we’ve inspired and entertained people of all ages and all backgrounds, something I have not seen in the West End for many years.

“I set out to tell our stories from my perspective of our multicultural London. Our show celebrates all of us on stage and behind the scenes, something myself and the team worked so well together to realise… Whether in the UK or abroad, Bend It Like Beckham will continue to defy expectations and proudly represent and celebrate the UK we all know and love.”
