Barrass catches return to Railway Children

Martin Barrass will be full steam ahead for a return trip to the theatre adaptation of The Railway Children this autumn, when he revives his performance as Mr Perks in the Olivier Award-winning London show from 17 October.

The Emmerdale and Angels star previously played Perks in 2009 at the York Theatre Royal, returning to the Yorkshire venue earlier this year.

Former cast member Louisa Clein will also climb back aboard the acclaimed family show this weekend, when the actress who appeared in the show’s original London cast reprises her performance as Phyllis.

Barrass and Clein join a cast at the King’s Cross Theatre that also includes Caroline Harker, Jack Hardwick and Serena Manteghi.

The stage adaptation of the E Nesbitt’s classic children’s book first steamed into London at Waterloo Station’s former Eurostar terminal in July 2010, going on to win the 2011 Olivier Award for Best Entertainment.

It chugged up the tracks to King’s Cross, where it plays in a purpose built 1,000-seat theatre, in December 2014. It is currently booking until 3 January 2016.

Directed by Damian Cruden and adapted by Mike Kenny, The Railway Children tells the story of three siblings whose lives change dramatically when their father is taken away. Moving from London to rural Yorkshire they embark on a journey of friendship and discovery, though the question of their father’s whereabouts lays heavily on them. Will he ever return?

The Railway Children was recently joined at the King’s Cross Theatre by the transfer of Southwark Playhouse’s musical theatre hit In The Heights, which is playing to 3 January.
