John Webster’s The White Devil is a haunting and brutal play which centres on the repercussions of an adulterous affair.

When Brachiano and Vittoria become involved in a dangerous love affair, an explosive conclusion seems inevitable. In a corrupt and savage Italy, where no one is who they seem, the individual must fight for survival against the structures that define their very existence: the State, the church and their own sense of right and wrong.

Webster is known for his bleak and disturbing vision of human nature, as displayed here and in his other well-known play, The Duchess Of Mafi.

The White Devil marks a departure for the Menier, which is known for its musical productions including Sunday In The Park With George.
