Kenneth MacMillan’s much-loved balletic interpretation of Shakespeare’s tragedy is danced to a passionate Prokofiev score.
The love between Romeo and Juliet does not bring their two warring families together, but simply stokes the fire of their anger, forcing the lovers into a final, terrible decision. MacMillan’s ballet mixes the stately formality of the ball with the swaggering action of feuding young men, though at its heart lays the touching lyricism of the young lovers.
