Twelve years after Eugene Onegin, Tchaikovsky composed his last, highly dramatic masterpiece, The Queen of Spades. Taking place in 18th century St Petersburg, this is the tragic tale of a penniless officer who wishes to marry the granddaughter of a Countess. He plans to make his fortune in the casino but as his gambling obsession grows, it overwhelms his love, causing him to risk everything on one final, fateful hand of cards.
