This great tradition is brought to life by China’s foremost company, led by today’s finest male and female stars, Yu Kuizhi and Li Shengsu. They are joined by a full supporting cast of actors, and an orchestra of 14 all playing traditional Chinese instruments. The programme has been specially chosen to illustrate the range and athleticism of Beijing Opera. Each one a series of physical and vocal gymnastics, the highlights include: Forest of the Wild Boars, an impassioned tale acclaimed for its spectacular battle scenes; Yu Kuizhi’s portrayal of a remorseful Emperor who laments his past actions in Suicide with a Golden Brick; and China’s most famous epic, Legend of the White Snake. This is the National Beijing Opera Company of China’s first ever tour to the UK, and is a rare opportunity to see truly authentic and high quality. With surtitles.
