Mark Gatiss wins Olivier

First Published 3 April 2016, Last Updated 6 April 2016

Mark Gatiss has won his first Olivier Award, succeeding for his acclaimed role in the National Theatre’s Three Days In The Country.

The multi-talented actor and writer was awarded the prize for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at tonight’s ceremony after fighting off competition from fellow nominees David Suchet, Michael Pennington and Tom Sturridge.

Writing about his performance in the National Theatre’s summer hit, Official London Theatre highlighted Gatiss’ brilliant performance, saying: “There are many fine performances amongst this stellar NT cast but the one that is likely to garner most, if not all, of the attention from audiences and critics is undoubtedly Mark Gatiss’ Shpigelsky.

“An enthusiastic cane-wielder, hilarious drunk and self-confessed maestro of misdiagnosis, he provides a perfectly polished finish to Patrick Marber’s already sparklingly wit.”

Gatiss was previously nominated for an Olivier Award in 2014 for his performance in the Donmar Warehouse’s Coriolanus, losing out to Ghosts’ Jack Lowden.
