The Changeling

Varla leads recast Changeling

Veteran of the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre, Zubin Varla is to lead the cast of The Changeling when the acclaimed production returns to the Young Vic later this year.

Thomas Middleton and William Rowley’s darkly comic tale, which runs from 20 November to 15 December, will also star Sinead Matthews and Harry Hadden-Paton.

Varla, who plays the man hired to bump off the beautiful Beatrice-Joanna’s unwanted suitor for an unthinkable price, has appeared in RSC productions including Midnight’s Children and Romeo And Juliet, and memorably played Daniel Doyce in the BBC adaptation of Little Dorrit.

Matthews returns to the venue where she previously appeared in The Glass Menagerie, having also starred in Mike Leigh’s Ecstasy (Hampstead theatre), while Hadden-Paten, whose credits include Flare Path, Posh and She Stoops To Conquer, makes his venue debut.

The trio join a cast that also includes Alex Beckett, Nick Lee, Alex Lowe, Eleanor Matsuura and Howard Ward.

The Joe Hill-Gibbins-directed production premiered at the Young Vic in February, when Call The Midwife’s Jessica Raine led the cast alongside Henry Lloyd-Hughes and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. The anarchic food-tossing production received much acclaim, prompting the upcoming revival.
