Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy The Cripple Of Inishmaan will make its Broadway premiere this spring when Michael Grandage’s critically acclaimed Daniel Radcliffe-led production transfers.
Radcliffe’s fellow original West End cast members Ingrid Craigie, Pádraic Delaney, Sarah Greene, Gillian Hanna, Gary Lilburn, Conor MacNeill, Pat Shortt and June Watson will all join the Harry Potter star across the Atlantic when the production begins previews from 12 April at New York’s Cort Theatre.
The talented ensemble received rave reviews for their work in Tony and Olivier Award-winning director Grandage’s revival when it opened as part of the Michael Grandage Company’s star-studded season at the Noël Coward Theatre last summer.
Telling the story of the inhabitants of a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, The New York Times described Radcliffe’s performance as the young cripple Billy as “remarkable”, while The Mail on Sunday declared the play to be “The most politically incorrect play in the West End – and probably the funniest.”
While the Donmar Warehouse’s former Artistic Director Grandage transferred numerous successful plays to the New York stage while running the producing house, including Red, Frost/Nixon and King Lear, The Cripple Of Inishmaan marks the first Broadway transfer for the company he set up alongside his former Donmar Warehouse colleague James Bierman in 2012.
Part of the company’s remit has been to offer affordable tickets for each of its hit shows playing as part of its inaugural West End season. This initiative will be rolled out to audiences across the pond with more than 10,000 tickets available for $27.
In London Grandage is currently presenting the final show in his season, Shakespeare’s Henry V, which stars Jude Law as the ruthless English monarch.
