Catherine Tate leads Miss Atomic Bomb

Published 18 January 2016

Catherine Tate will star in the world premiere of musical comedy Miss Atomic Bomb at the St James Theatre this March alongside a stellar cast including Dean John-Wilson, Daniel Boys and Simon Lipkin.

Co-directed by Top Hat’s Olivier Award-winning choreographer Bill Deamer and Adam Long, Miss Atomic Bomb will take audiences on a witty and fascinating journey to 1952 Las Vegas, where tourists once flocked to witness the US military test atomic bombs from a safe distance.

As the tourists cheer the mushroom clouds and wait to find out who will be crowned the Miss Atomic Bomb beauty queen, the musical centres on the story of four friends in need of some luck. Farm girl Candy’s sheep have mysteriously died, her fashionista friend Myrna is designing clothes for pigs, young soldier Joey has deserted the army while his hapless hotel manager brother Lou is in desperate need of an atomic gimmick. In a city controlled by the military and the mob, time is running out for this quartet.

Doctor Who star and TV comedian Tate will lead the quirky production as Myrna, following her numerous theatre credits including Assassins, Much Ado About Nothing, Under The Blue Sky and the National Theatre hit Season’s Greetings.

She is joined in the starring roles by A Little Night Music star Florence Andrews, forthcoming star of Disney’s Aladdin John-Wilson (Here Lies Love, Songs For A New World), musical theatre regular Simon Lipkin (The Lorax, Assassins, Rock Of Ages) and former Avenue Q star, Any Dream Will Do’s Boys (Spamalot, Grease, Wolfboy).

They will be joined in Long, Gabriel Vick and Alex Jackson-Long’s creation by a host of musical theatre regulars including Michelle Andrews, Stephane Anelli, Charles Brunton, Jessica Buckby, Cavin Cornwall, Olivia Fines, Ryan Gover, Alyn Hawke, Sion Lloyd, Suzie McAdam, Kirk Patterson and Sasi Strallen.

Miss Atomic Bomb will explode onto the St James Theatre stage from 7 March to 9 April. You can find out more about the musical and its real-life inspiration in the video feature below.
