Casting announced for the Oscar Wilde season at Vaudeville Theatre

By Carly-Ann Clements Published 7 March 2018

Classic Spring’s Oscar Wilde season at the Vaudeville Theatre is in full swing. And this week, casting for Guy Chambers’ new folk opera, The Selfish Giant, and further casting for An Ideal Husband has been announced.

Casting for The Selfish Giant

In The Selfish Giant, Jeff Nicholson (ENO’s Sweeney Todd and Urinetown) will play the titular character of Giant. Laila Zaidi, Rose Shalloo, Izuka Hoyle, Natasha Cottriall and Laura Sillett will star alongside Jeff, with young actors Scott Sutcliffe, Jacob Fisher and Olly Dobson joining the cast as Boy.

The Selfish Giant is adapted from Oscar Wilde’s classic children’s story of the same name. It tells the tale of a giant who has a beautiful garden that children aren’t allowed to play in. But when winter comes and never leaves, the giant doesn’t know what to do.

Further casting for An Ideal Husband

In addition to real-life father-and-son duo Edward and Freddie Fox, Sally Bretton and Nathaniel Parker will star in Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband.

Sally – famed for her role in BBC’s Not Going Out – will play Lady Chiltern, the upright and earnest heroine who’s naïve to the scheming around her. And Nathaniel – who played Thomas Lynley in The Inspector Lynley Mysteries – will play Sir Robert Chiltern, the play’s “tragic” hero whose success and fortune are owed to a secret scandal.

An Ideal Husband is Oscar’s witty exploration of human frailty against the pressures of Victorian society, and the corruption and blackmail that ensures when politics is brought into a family home.

Classic Spring is a new theatre company from former Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe Dominic Dromgoole. The company is staging an unprecedented year-long celebration of Oscar Wilde at the Vaudeville Theatre, including runs of all four of his major plays.

There is nothing that you need to do if your performance has been cancelled, but we do ask for your patience.
