Belly Laughs: Our top four funniest West End shows

Published 9 June 2021

After the year we’ve had, we’re all going to need a big laugh this summer. Fortunately, there’s no better place to get the giggles than watching a comedy in the West End. From reimagining’s of classics such as Only Fools and Horses the Musical to the side-splittingly funny The Play That Goes Wrong, there will be no shortage of hilarious shows when theatre kickstarts again in summer 2021. To get you geared up for funny season, we’ve got together a list of our favourite West End comedies.

& Juliet

Debuting in 2019, & Juliet is a remix of the most famous love story around. The award-winning musical asks: what if Juliet’s untimely ending was really just the beginning? Littered with a variety of pop anthems such as Everybody (Backstreet’s Back), Love Me Like You Do and Can’t Feel My Face, the musical is already a contemporary comedy classic in the eyes of West End critics. If you’ve ever wondered what a modern, remixed Shakespeare play would look like, & Juliet has got the answer.

Only Fools And Horses

If you’re a fan of the funniest sitcom on British TV (and let’s face it, who isn’t?), you should be chomping at the bit to get a seat for the Only Fools And Horses The Musical. With Del Boy, Rodney and other big characters making their debut on the West End stage in 2019, audiences were met with hilarious one-liners and those classic catchphrases we all know and love. Don’t be a plonker – keep an eye out for tickets to one of the funniest shows in London this summer.

The Play That Goes Wrong

Not a fan of musicals? The Play That Goes Wrong is an uproarious production that won Best New Comedy at the Laurence Olivier Awards in 2015. Let’s be honest – is hard to suppress a snigger when something goes wrong during a performance. The Play That Goes Wrong takes that sweet spot and creates a whole production around the idea of shocking acting, sub-standard sets and a senseless plot. The result is a side-splittingly funny play.

Pretty Woman the Musical

If you love your rom-coms, Pretty Woman The Musical should be at the top of your theatre bucket list. With box office records and a variety of awards after it’s debut in 2018, the production has crossed the pond and made its home in the West End. The musical side of the production doesn’t disappoint either, with music and lyrics from the legendary Jim Vallance and Bryan Adams. Pretty Woman in London is ready for summer in 2021 – so make sure you secure your tickets!

Thankfully, summer 2021 is shaping up to be one of the best for comedy in recent years. From musicals to plays, there are plenty of rib-tickling, laugh-old loud comedies to sink your teeth into.
