Penny Woolcock revisits her acclaimed 2010 production to bring this compelling tale of friendship to life once again.

Exploring themes of desire and rejection, longing and loss, and religious strictures, The Pearl Fishers features Bizet’s memorable melodies, colourful orchestration and evocative choruses.

From the opening sequence’s mesmerising underwater paradise to the reality of designer Dick Bird’s shanty town setting, Woolcock’s staging seeks to reveal the truth lurking beneath Bizet’s Orientalist confection.

Best known as a filmmaker, Woolcock has enjoyed previous success with operas including Doctor Atomic, which was staged by ENO in 2009.

This production is sung and surtitled in English.
