Playing a limited run at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre prior to a national and international tour, this revival of the critically acclaimed 2015 Globe production of The Merchant Of The Venice stars Jonathan Pryce as Shylock.

A story of intolerance, justice and mercy, The Merchant Of Venice is set in a society which represents the epicentre of consumption, speculation and debt. When Bassanio borrows money from his friend Antonio to finance his romantic overtures towards Portia, a wealthy heiress, Antonio must in turn borrow from the moneylender Shylock.

But the failure of Antonio’s ships to the city casts aspersions over his ability to settle his debt with Shylock, who, one way or another, is determined to claim his ‘bond’ – even if it means taking a pound of Antonio’s flesh.

This is a highly-charged dramatization which explores the competing claims of tolerance and intolerance, and features a heralded Pryce as one of Shakespeare’s most memorable outsiders.
