The Flying Lovers Of Vitebsk follows a young couple as they navigate the fluid course of history – and their relationship – in a tale woven throughout with both music and dance inspired by Russian Jewish tradition.

Directed by Shakespeare’s Globe Artistic Director Emma Rice, the candlelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse plays host to the story of Marc and Bella Chagall, also known as The Flying Lovers Of Vitebsk, immortalised as the picture of romance on the canvas and loving partners in real life.

But beneath their portrait lies life stories which encompassed some of the most devastating times in modern history, from the Pogroms to the Russian Revolution.

The picture of romance, their tales are told in a theatrical language as fluid as Chagall’s paintings, and interweaved with beautiful music and dance.
