Using innovative binaural technology to craft a unique storytelling experience, Simon McBurney and Complicite plunge us into the humid depths of the Amazon, as The Encounter arrives at the Barbican Theatre.

Inspired by Petru Popescu’s book Amazon Beaming, it is 1969, and National Geographic photographer Loren McIntyre finds himself stranded in a remote area of the vast Brazilian rainforest.

While seeking the Mayoruna people he becomes hopelessly lost, but his resultant encounter with the people of the Javari Valley challenges his perception of the world around him, bringing the limits of time, communication and even human consciousness into startling focus.

In a wholly immersive and ground-breaking production, McBurney incorporates innovative technology into his solo performance to build an engrossing soundscape of the rainforest landscape. Transmitted directly to the audience through provided headphones, this show empowers and transports the human imagination.

Please note, this production is recommended for individuals ages 12 and older.
