Schubert’s haunting song cycle is reinterpreted through Hans Zender’s startling orchestration and theatrically adapted for the stage to evoke the abrasive cabaret style of post-Weimar Germany, telling The Dark Mirror: Zender’s Winterreise – a story of the loss of love.

Plunged into a stark wintry landscape, a wanderer embarks on an intensely dramatic journey, his reflections on the meaning of life alternating between young, male angst and well-worn nostalgia, between sardonic humour and depressive longing.

‘The most imaginative director of opera working in Britain today’ (Observer), Netia Jones integrates film, video, projections and traditional design into live music performances.

Collaborating with tenor Ian Bostridge – a world-leading performer of Winterreise – and Britten Sinfonia, she uses multilayered imagery to realise a monochrome world of foreboding shadow and glittering light.

Sung in German with English surtitles.
