However attractive the deal might appear, selling your soul to the devil is never worth the price. This fact is born out in macabre fashion by Stravinsky’s masterpiece. Based on a Russian folktale, The Soldier’s Tale was first produced in Switzerland in 1917 and is riven-through with the nightmarish atmosphere of the First World War.
