Smash! is Jack Rosenthal’s scathing look at the journey of a musical from page to stage.
Written as a response to his own experience of turning his TV play Bar Mitzvah Boy into a musical, Smash! features a cast of characters including a cantankerous composer, a fantastist lyricist, a neophyte novelist-turned-playwright, a cocksure director and a bombastic producer.
Rosenthal, who died in 2004, was a TV dramatist who wrote numerous episodes of Coronation Street, created the series London’s Burning and wrote TV dramas Spend Spend Spend, The Evacuees and The Knowledge.
Smash! stars Tom Conti, returning to the stage for the first time since Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell in 2006, along with Richard Schiff, best known for The West Wing.
