The tale of a man who has the chance to reinvent himself with a different identity.

Sizwe Banzi has to provide for his family, but he is prevented from working as his passbook contains the wrong information. When he finds a corpse at the side of the road, it offers him a way out; he could take the dead man’s papers.

Sizwe Banzi Is Dead is the second of three Statement Plays by Athol Fugard, and part of the series of ‘Township Plays’ based on the life of the urban black community in Apartheid era South Africa.

Performed in French with English surtitles.
